Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation refers to the darkening of certain areas of the skin, usually caused by an excess production of melanin; the pigment responsible for skin colour.

The most common hyperpigmentation concerns we see in our patient cohort are melasma, solar lentigines (age spots) and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Melasma is a chronic skin condition characterised by (mostly) symmetrical, patchy, brownish pigmentation patterns on the face; the cheeks, nose, upper lip, forehead and chin are the most common sites of melasma. The condition can be caused by hormonal changes, sun exposure, or a genetic predisposition, and it is mostly seen in women. Pregnancy, the contraceptive pill and hormone replacement therapies are common causes, and onset is generally between 20-40 years of age.

How is Melasma Treated?

Melasma is a difficult condition to treat as it is easily aggravated by sun exposure and hormones. Often, melasma is very stubborn, and improving the appearance of melasma often requires multiple different types of treatments in combination, as well as patience and perseverance. Complete eradication of this condition is almost impossible. However, here at RiverEnd Aesthetics we do offer evidence-based treatment options to help minimise the appearance of melasma.

Melasma treatments are focussed on trying to prevent melanocytes (the cells in the skin that produce melanin) from producing the pigment. Addressing hyperpigmentation often involves a combination of preventive measures (like sun protection), topical treatments (such as topical lightening agents or retinoids), and in some cases, professional procedures (like chemical peels, laser therapy, or microdermabrasion), depending on the underlying cause and severity of the condition.

At RiverEnd Aesthetics our doctors conduct medical consultations for patients with concerns about hyperpigmentation, and offer advice on the best course of action in your particular situation. Depending on the severity of hyperpigmentation, you may be prescribed a topical ointment to apply to the area of concern. This cream acts as a bleaching agent, as well as helping to stop the overproduction of pigmented skin cells.
