Ageing Hands
The hands are one of the first areas to start showing signs of ageing. Most people find their hands start to appear more aged in their 40’s, however the signs of ageing can begin earlier if sunscreen was not applied regularly in your younger years.
There are various factors contributing to the signs of ageing in the hands:
- Loss of Volume: As we age, the natural fat padding in the back of our hands diminishes, leading to a loss of volume and fullness. This can result in prominent veins and tendons becoming more visible, and a skeletal appearance of the hands.
- Thinning Skin: The skin on the hands becomes thinner over time due to a decrease in collagen and elastin production. Collagen and elastin are proteins that provide structure and elasticity to the skin, helping it stay firm and smooth. With reduced levels of these proteins, the skin becomes more fragile and prone to wrinkles and fine lines.
- Sun Damage: Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun accelerates the ageing process, a phenomenon known as “photoageing”. The hands are often exposed to sunlight without protection, leading to sun damage such as dark spots (solar lentigines or “liver spots” – these actually have nothing to do with your liver!), uneven pigmentation, and the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibres.
- Loss of Hydration: Ageing skin tends to lose moisture and natural oils, making it dry and prone to cracking. This can further contribute to the appearance of wrinkles and creases on the hands.
